Indisciplinarity

Created 11 June 2025

Indisciplinarity is a website that will range across a variety of academic disciplines and discusses them at a popular level, while maintaining that the dividing walls erected between those disciplines are barriers to truth. There are many defintions of indisciplinarity in academic circles, including the accusation that it is the wild cousin of multidisciplinary approaches, in that indisciplinarity does not care if utter chaos is the result of challenging the very existence of disciplinary boundaries. This website is the work of a single author, Mark Walker, but that will only slightly lessen the chaos, because I delight in swimming against the tide of received opinion and finding connections between topics that others would prefer are safely hidden from each other behind high disciplinary walls.

Indisciplinarity will be written like an encyclopedia, rather than a blog. The approach of most blogs is that if the author's opinion changes then a new article is written and the older articles are not updated. In part, this is a marketing strategy to improve rankings in search engines, but it makes it harder for the reader to understand an author's opinion on a topic, because different aspects of their thought might be scattered across multiple, often contradictory, articles. The encyclopedia approach is to update the original article when my opinion changes, because you do not need to know what I used to think, but you might like to have my thoughts on a topic gathered together into one article.

There is nothing wrong with contradictory opinions, as such contradiction will hopefully give rise to reflection in the reader as to which of the opinions they prefer, or oreferably end up with a new opinion that will give rise to further reflections by other readers and participants in the wider conversation. My own approach is to root out contradictions in my own writings in the hope of creating a coherent system that works for me, while encouraging others to develop alternative coherent systems that differ from mine either in totality or in certain details.

This initial version of the home page for Indisciplinarity is designed to provide a welcome page to a website that has not yet been written. This home page may in fact change more often than the future articles to which it will provide links. There is no planned completion date, because I will never feel that my thought is complete until I am either too infirm or too dead to write any more articles.
